Description

Discover the Hidden and Haunted History Beneath Rome’s Bustling Streets

Your private journey into the shadows begins at the foot of Castel Sant’Angelo. Originally constructed as a grand mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian, it later evolved into a fortress of papal refuge and a terrifying prison. Standing before the iconic Ponte Sant’Angelo, your expert guide will pull back the curtain on Rome’s grim judicial past, recounting the heartbreaking tragedy of the Cenci family at the exact site where public executions once drew massive, morbid crowds.

From there, you will dive into the macabre life of Giovanni Battista Bugatti—famously known as Mastro Titta, the official executioner of the Papal States who carried out over 500 executions. Stopping near his childhood home, you will hear fascinating, chilling entries from his personal diary, offering a rare glimpse into the psychological side of his grim profession and the elaborate spectacles surrounding the papal guillotine.

As you navigate the winding cobblestones, your guide will introduce you to Giulia Tofana, the brilliant and lethal 17th-century mixologist who created Aqua Tofana—a deadly, tasteless poison masquerading as a cosmetic that allowed hundreds of women to quietly achieve widowhood. The intrigue deepens as you pass the eerie exterior of Santa Maria dell’Orazione e Morte and the sinister Fontana del Mascherone, matching architectural curiosity with dark historical facts.

Crossing the Tiber River via the historic Ponte Sisto—commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV to replace treacherous ferry routes but plagued by its own history of tragedies—you will catch a glimpse of Trastevere’s culture. Here, you will discover the Madonelle, sacred street corner shrines that served as the city’s earliest, spiritual streetlights to ward off nighttime criminals.

Your tour reaches its dramatic finale in Campo de’ Fiori. Once a notorious field of execution for heretics, you will stand beneath the shadow of the philosopher-monk Giordano Bruno, learning of his fiery defiance and discovering why many believe his spirit still haunts the piazza. This exclusive experience promises to illuminate Rome’s secrets, delivering an unforgettable journey into the enigmatic soul of the city.
